Specialty Pharmacy FAQ
Questions are grouped by topic and where you might be in your experience.
Checking status and tracking specialty pharmacy orders
Sign in to your online account to see your order status. You’ll find updates on the home page, including when your medication ships.
Your order status may show:
- We’re reviewing your order.
- We’re working with your insurance.
- Your medication is being prepared.
- Your medication has shipped.
If something changes, you’ll usually see it in your online account.
Tracking details appear after your medication ships.
If your order is still being reviewed or prepared, tracking won’t show yet. You can check back later to see if a new update has been posted.
Your online account has the most up‑to‑date information. If something doesn’t look right, or if you’d rather talk to someone, you can always call us
Refills
Simply sign in and click on the medication that’s ready to refill. You can place your refill order in just a few steps, then move on to other parts of your day.
Schedule My Fill lets you choose refill dates once you’ve had 3 on‑time refills. This helps you avoid running out of medication.
Before you can set up a refill schedule, complete a clinical review. Your first review happens by phone with one of our experts. After that, many patients can answer questions online.
You can sign in anytime to update your refill dates.
Cost support
Here are the most common types of cost support:
- Copay assistance programs
- Drug manufacturer assistance
- Foundations and medication grants
- Patient assistance programs
Some manufacturers offer copay assistance or copay savings cards that may lower what you pay out of pocket. Availability and savings depend on the program and your insurance.
You can look for copay cards and other savings options in your online account:
- Go to More to consider.
- Select Check TailorMed for savings.
- Find your medication.
- Follow the steps shown.
You may be redirected to the drug manufacturer site to sign up for a copay card. If you find a card, add it to your order before checkout.
If you don’t have insurance, you may still be able to get help paying for your specialty or infusion medication. Many drug manufacturers offer patient assistance programs that provide medications at low or no cost to eligible individuals who are uninsured or have limited financial resources.

Insurance and prior authorization
It’s a common insurance step where the plan needs more details before they’ll cover your medication.
If prior authorization is needed, we work with your doctor and your insurance plan to share the information they ask for.
This process can take a few days. It’s fastest to check your online account for insurance decisions. If something doesn’t look right, you can always call.
This doesn’t mean you’re out of options. The insurance plan simply needs more details about why a medication that's on the covered list is right for you.
Talking with your doctor is a good place to start. They can decide if there’s another covered option that might work for you and send us a new prescription.
Or they can contact us for help getting new details to appeal the decision. We have a team that can help do some of the work and follow up with insurance so they can take another look.
Optum Specialty Pharmacy is in network for many plans, so it's likely that you can keep filling your prescriptions here — and take one thing off your to-do list.
The good news is that you do not have any action to take. When your refill is due, we'll run your benefit and fill as usual. If there are changes to your pharmacy network, we will let you know.
Clinical support
We have experts in many specialty conditions. They can offer support, answer questions and help you start a steady medication routine. Set up a clinical assessment today.
Text reminders can help you remember and stay on track.
Once you've done a clinical review with one of our expert team members, you can sign up for the adherence texting program. You'll get text reminders each time you should take your medication. When you take your medication as directed, it works the best and can help you feel better.
Medication questions
A pharmacist can help. Call the phone number on your prescription label to speak with a pharmacist or care coordinator. No question is too small when it comes to your health.
